Catholics see Holy Penis in 10-Foot-Tall Jesus Crucifix
post entry title background

Members of the St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church in Warr Acres, Oklahoma have expressed outrage at the recent installation of a 10-foot tall Crucifix above the altar:  Because they say it depicts Jesus with an enormously huge schlong.

The crucifix in question is based on th San Damiano cross, a common Catholic icon that originated in Italy in the 12th century and is widely associated with St. Francis of Assisi and the order he founded, the Franciscans.

“I think it’s an embarrassment to our Lord. I think it’s an embarrassment to our parishioners. And I think it’s an embarrassment to our visitors,” said one old lady.

“I was appalled at the sexualization of Christ.”

“I’m already very sensitive because of the pedophilia issue.”

Wait, what?

Can atheists arrest the Pope?
post entry title background

Two prominent atheists are planning a “legal ambush” to have Pope Benedict XVI arrested for “crimes against humanity” during a 4-day September state visit to Britain.

Richard Dawkins, author of The God Delusion, and author Christopher Hitchens — with help from human rights lawyers — plan to employ the same legal principle (universal jurisdiction) that British authorities used to arrest the late Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet in 1998.

(Meanwhile, more than 10,000 people have signed a petition protesting the cost of the pope’s visits.)

Do Dawkins and Hitchens have a case, or are they just using the abuse scandal to bash religion?

Meet the Texas Taliban
post entry title background

“This site is not designed for non-Christians, It is designed as a recruitment tool to call certain Christians to spiritual warfare.” – from the Repent Amarillo website.

Repent Amarillo is the name of the group that has made it their mission to piss off the 67,000 who don’t subscribe to the Coo-coo for Cocopuffs flavor of Jesusism.

Quick to point out they are NOT protesters, “Army of God” (sound familiar?) soldiers perform “missions” of a confrontational nature to groups or through one-on-one “witnessing”.

Funny, because the “witnessing” sure looks like “harassment” to me, as seen in this 3 minute video taken by the owner of a private, adults-only swingers club. Repent Amarillo showed up in military fatigues and bullhorns, blaring Christian music.

The swingers, made up of middle aged, working class couples, were then stalked at every following visit to the club.

Repent not only took video of each member, but obtained the swingers’ license plates and dug through their trash, informing neighbors and co-workers of what was once private.

But they don’t stop at swingers clubs…no, no, no! Their website says they are much more open-minded than that…they will harass people at:

1. Gay pride events.
2. Earth worship events such as “Earth Day”
3. Pro-abortion events or places such as Planned Parenthood
4. Breast cancer events such as “Race for the Cure” to illuminate the link between abortion and breast cancer.
5. Opening day of public schools to reach out to students.
6. Spring break events.
7. Demonically based concerts.
8. Halloween events.
9. Other events that may arise that the ministry feels called to confront.

As my friend Dave is fond of saying, “You know your god is man-made when he hates all the same people you do.”

Evangelical Christians raising cash to protest Glenn Beck
post entry title background

I never thought I’d have the Evangelical Christians helping fight against Glenn Beck, but it appears so.

“Glenn Beck has gone too far!” says the website of the New Evangelical Partnership. Based on my research of the group, they’re a new partnership, predominately evangelical in nature. The website has the words “Nuclear Disarmament”, “prison reform”, “Muslim-Christian Dialogue” and “creation care initiatives” emblazoned at the top.

I’m not sure what creation care initiatives are, but I do know what’s got them all riled up…something Beck said about “social justice”…

“I beg you, look for the words social justice or economic justice on your church web site. If you find it, run as fast as you can. Social justice and economic justice, they are code words. Now, the idea, hang on, am I advising people to leave their church… yes!… If you have a priest that is pushing social justice, go find another parish.”

I haven’t looked through their whole website, but I gather from their reaction that you might find these words a few times.

Their plan to take down Glenn Beck? Of course….raise $5000 to produce a YouTube video.

That’ll show him.

Students trade in Bibles for FREE PORN!
post entry title background

A group of students at the University of Texas at San Antonio called “Atheist Agenda” is asking students to trade in their religious texts (bibles, prayer books, etc) in exchange for free pornography.

Atheist Agenda was founded at UTSA in 2005 and  is “dedicated to the philosophy of free thought, as well as promoting aggressive activism against theology and theological institutions, encouraging non-believers to take pride in their history and community, and providing to them the same fellowship that those of a religious background share.”

Atheist Agenda leaders say porn is no worse than what’s written in some religious texts.

Of course, that depends on the porn.

The Search for the Holy Nail
post entry title background

A nail from the time of Christ’s crucifixion which was hidden by the same knights who featured in The Da Vinci Code has been found in a dig.

The four-inch Roman relic, stored in an ornate box, was uncovered by archaeologists working at a fort thought to have been a former Knights Templar stronghold.

It was buried with three skeletons and three swords, including one with the religious order’s cross on its blade, on the tiny island of Ilheu de Pontinha, off Madeira.

Are you good without God? Millions are.
post entry title background

In the United States, more than 8 in 10 people regard themselves as religious, but from Tampa to Cincinnati and all the way across to Sacramento, billboards have been cropping up with messages that encourage a belief system not based on a greater deity.

“Don’t believe in God? You’re not alone!” were the first posters to be put up, in Arizona, Colorado, Texas and parts of the northeast.

“Being a good person doesn’t require God,” reads another.

The billboards are the work of a national group called United Coalition of Reason, a group that seeks to encourage nonbelievers throughout America by bringing them together.

“The point of our national program is to reach out to the millions of humanists, atheists and agnostics living in the United States.  Nontheists sometimes don’t realize there’s a community out there for them because they’re inundated with religious messages at every turn. So we hope this will serve as a beacon and let them know they aren’t alone.” – Fred Edwords, national director of the United Coalition of Reason.

The Skull of Saint Valentine…or IS IT???
post entry title background

This is a photo of the flower-crowned skull allegedly of Saint Valentine which is currently on display  in the Basilica of Santa Maria in Cosmedin, Rome Italy.

Here’s the issue:  Saint Valentine (or in Latin, Valentinus) is the name of several martyred saints of ancient Rome. The name “Valentine” apparently was quite popular as it meant “valor”.

Of the Saint Valentine whose feast is on February 14, nothing is known except his name and that he was buried on February 14.

It is even uncertain whether the feast of that day celebrates only one saint or more saints of the same name.   For this reason St. Valentine was not kept in the Catholic calendar of saints for universal liturgical veneration as revised in 1969.   Doubting Thomas?  Read it and weep for the fallen Saint.

So I wanna know who’s skull this really is!

And how often do they change the flowers on the crown?
