What happens to your body when you drink a Coke?
post entry title background

Apparently the reason they removed the cocaine from Coke was because it was redundant:

In the first 10 minutes: 10 teaspoons of sugar hit your system. (100% of your recommended daily intake.) You don’t immediately vomit from the overwhelming sweetness because phosphoric acid cuts the flavor, allowing you to keep it down.

20 minutes: Your blood sugar spikes, causing an insulin burst. Your liver responds to this by turning any sugar it can get its hands on into fat. (And there’s plenty of that at this particular moment.)

40 minutes: Caffeine absorption is complete. Your pupils dilate; your blood pressure rises; as a response, your liver dumps more sugar into your bloodstream. The adenosine receptors in your brain are now blocked, preventing drowsiness.

45 minutes: Your body ups your dopamine production, stimulating the pleasure centers of your brain. This is physically the same way heroin works, by the way.

> 60 minutes: The phosphoric acid binds calcium, magnesium, and zinc in your lower intestine, providing a further boost in metabolism. This is compounded by high doses of sugar and artificial sweeteners also increasing the urinary excretion of calcium.

> 60 minutes: The caffeine’s diuretic properties come into play. (It makes you have to pee.) It is now assured that you’ll evacuate the bonded calcium, magnesium, and zinc that was headed to your bones as well as sodium, electrolytes, and water.

> 60 minutes: As the rave inside you dies down, you’ll start to have a sugar crash. You may become irritable and/or sluggish. You’ve also now, literally, pissed away all the water that was in the Coke. But not before infusing it with valuable nutrients your body could have used for things like hydrating your system, or building strong bones and teeth.

This will all be followed by a caffeine crash in the next few hours. (As little as two if you’re a smoker.) Want to know what happens after that? Check out what happens to your body after you drink a coke, every day for a long time.

Coke itself isn’t the enemy here. It’s the dynamic combo of massive sugar doses combined with caffeine and phosphoric acid, which are found in almost all sodas. Moderation, people

Cafe 118 Review – A Raw Organic Vegan restaurant in Winter Park Florida

Crispy vegetable rolls

Crispy Vegetable Rolls - $13

So my vegan girlfriend wanted to get some raw organic vegan food…oh brother.

What are Raw Organics?

Raw organics are foods that are free of animal by product and processed/refined sugars.  These foods are heated below 118 degrees (hence the name of Cafe 118), presumably in order to preserve as much of the food’s natural vitamins, enzymes, nutrients and fiber as possible.   By definition, they’re dairy-free…we’re talking freshly prepared, organically grown fruits, vegetables and nuts.

Crispy vegetable rolls

Lasagna - $18

We visited Cafe 118 in Winter Park which serves only raw organics.   As it was our first visit, our server, Danielle, was super helpful in explaining the menu.   While not inexpensive, it was one of the best dining experiences I’ve had in a long time.

We started with some $8 dairy free “milk” shakes, made with almond milk.  Mine was called “Sundae Drive”, which is basically a chocolate banana sundae in a shake with some hemp protein added.   She had the Divine Cherry, made with cherries, cacao and banana.

Beet Ravioli

Next came the Crispy Vegetable Rolls  ($13).   Carrot, Cabbage in almond dressing with a sweet & sour dipping sauce.  They were delicious and the sauce is fantastic.

For a main entree, I had the Lasagna ($18), which really was quite like real lasagna…minus the noodles.   Sun dried tomatoes, herb pesto with a macadamia ricotta.   She had the Beet Ravioli ($14) made with the macadamia ricotta, arugula and a pear wine sauce.

Smores $8 and Chocolate Hazelnut Tart $8

It’s hard to believe you can feel full from this stuff…but trust me…it’s quite filling.  Especially when you add the delicious dessert.  Danielle was pushing the dairy-free ice cream, but we ordered the Smores (amazing!) and the Chocolate Hazelnut Tart (so rich!).

Cafe 188 is located at 153 East Morse Blvd, Winter Park Florida (1 block off Park Avenue).

You can check out their website here:  www.cafe118.com

I’ll be back for some ice cream next time.  :-)

Non-Profit Panera Restaurant: No prices, just donations
post entry title background

Panera launched a new nonprofit store in Clayton Missouri called St. Louis Bread Company Cares that has the same menu as its other 1,400 Panera locations. But the prices are a little different – there aren’t any.

Instead, customers are told to donate what they want for a meal, whether it’s the full suggested price, a penny or $100.

The pilot restaurant is run by a nonprofit foundation. If it can sustain itself financially, Panera will expand the model around the country within months. It all depends on whether customers will abide by the motto that hangs above the deli counter: “Take what you need, leave your fair share.”

Pesticides linked to ADHD
post entry title background

Exposure to pesticides used on common kid-friendly foods — including frozen blueberries, fresh strawberries and celery — appears to boost the chances that children will be diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, or ADHD, new research shows.

Youngsters with high levels of pesticide residue in their urine, particularly from widely used types of insecticide such as malathion, were more likely to have ADHD, the behavior disorder that often disrupts school and social life, scientists in the United States and Canada found.

King Corn: a movie about Corn
post entry title background

I know it doesn’t sound too exciting, but I really enjoyed this documentary by two college buddies who happened to be from the same small town in Iowa.

Following a chemical test that determines that the carbon content in their hair follicles predominately comes from corn, Ian Cheney and Curtis Ellis visit their home town to farm an acre of corn, following its path through America’s food processes and into our bellies in the form of Happy Meals.

King Corn is available for purchase on Amazon or if you have Netflix it’s available right now for instant view.

California County bans toys from Happy Meals
post entry title background

Santa Clara County, California became the first in the nation to ban toys from fast food kids’ meals high in calories, fat, salt and sugar (more than 485 calories).

County supervisor Ken Yeager said Tuesday that the ordinance “prevents restaurants from preying on children’s love of toys to peddle high-calorie, high-fat, high-sodium kids’ meals,” and would help fight childhood obesity.

Perhaps Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution is working!

I’d rather see parents taking responsibility for their kids’ food rather than politicians passing laws, but whatever it takes!

Loving Hut: Vegan Restaurant or Re-Education Camp?
post entry title background

I ate dinner at a local Orlando restaurant called “The Loving Hut”.   It’s a vegan restaurant.   This is what happens when you date a vegan:  suddenly you find yourself dining at places called “The Loving Hut”.  My buddy called me while I was there, and after I told him the name of of the joint, he exclaimed, “Oh, are you hugging yet?  Should I let you go?”

But I digress, because the name of the place is not even the beginning of this story.  The place is empty, save for a 20’s-something hipster with a laptop in the corner.  The decor looks like any EXTREMELY BRIGHT asian-ish?…Pizza Hut??

I actually haven’t been inside a Pizza Hut lately, so I’m not sure what they look like…but this place certainly looks like it belongs near a food court.    Maybe it’s the white chairs…or the big flat-screen televisions…

I notice that the flat screens are all Broadcasting the same thing: Supreme Master TV.

Supreme Master Ching Hai International is the corporate entity behind Guanyin Famen/Quan Yin. It is affiliated with World Peace Media, Oceans of Love Entertainment, Supreme Master Television, and several cable television series…all groups and businesses established by Ching Hai.

She also owns the Loving Hut.

I am now her servant.

Peace.   Love.   Be Vegan.

Don’t be afraid.  Just buy her food (which was pretty tasty, I might add)
